Ocho de Mayo was my 39th birthday, and since it was MY day, I got to do what I wanted, and what I wanted was what I always want…a day at the beach (so in actuality, it wasn’t a lot different from any other weekend). Fortunately, the weather was perfect for sailing. It was blowing snot and the surf was up. I was all set to make a great movie, but brought the wrong mount for the mast-top-cam… Oh well, next time. The footage I got is still fun, and I hope you enjoy it, it’s been a LONG time since I’ve made a movie. This one is especially fun, because I finally got Stace and I in the same movie. A couple more years, and Kai will be able to come out, too!

Aloha, and Mele Kalikimaka!
The winter solstice has passed, the days are getting longer, and 2009 is almost gone. I really wanted to get a picture of us all in the canoe for our Christmas card… Yesterday, we finally had some time where our schedules lined up, and the sun hid behind the clouds the whole time we were out (fortunately, it popped out and the lighting was perfect right after we put the canoe away…). Shane was nice enough to come take the pictures for us, even though I’m sure he had a million other things he would have rather been doing. We’re glad he did, though, because he really does an awesome job! Thanks a million Shane (and Roxy!). We couldn’t decide which picture to put on our Christmas card, so we made this little video to showcase our favorites. We hope you enjoy it.

Kaile had a “drop-off” birthday party in Lanikai, the weather was perfect, Stace was game… All I heard was blah, blah, we can take out Holole’a! Stace called Nani, Nani called Hillary, next thing you know the boat was full. I’ve been meaning to get some footage of the canoe with the trampoline on, so I brought the cameras along. Unfortunately, the front camera’s memory card crapped out, so all I have is the mast head shot; but hey, at least it’s something. We started inside the reef, headed for the Mokes, then headed out through one of the channels. The wide angle lens flattens out the waves, so you’ll have to take my word for it that there was a little surf running on the outside… Once we got clear of the breaking waves, we shot down to flat island to make a couple loops. “One more time” started to become the rally cry, but since that phrase rarely ends well, we changed it to the less final, “let’s go around again!” The camera only records about an hour, so all I have on film is the launch through the first time around flat. Once again, you’ll have to take my word for it, but we caught some much better waves on subsequent trips around. I guess I need to take the camera out again…
Final note: Usually, finding the right music for these little video clips is one of the hardest things to do – this time it was a no-brainer .
Aloha.

Shane has a relatively new camera, is REALLY GOOD at capturing awesome images, and was kind enough to come document the fact that Stace and I know how to dress up. He is quite the photog, no? The next morning, Veteran’s day, we were greeted with blustery but beautiful weather and met up with Rox, Shane and Kai at the canoe (Picutres of the canoe coming in another post…). Those are the best “beach time” pictues we have! Enjoy.

We gave up on the weather, and were headed over the hill to waste some time, when I got a call. The weather is clearing up, and the surf is AWESOME!!! We pulled a U’ey and zoomed back home. I threw the board in the truck and headed to Lanikai Reef. The sets were still pretty giant – the channel between Lefts Lefts and Wraps was completely closed out on the bigger sets, but once I punched through, I took a off on a couple second story bombs. It was SWEET! While I was out, I noticed a 4-man with only 3 paddlers. I paddled over to see who it was, and they invited me to join. I left my board on the Mokes and climbed in. We got a bunch of fun waves, then dropping in on a giant, the steersman broke his (actually, it was Derek’s) paddle and we got donuts. The ama got ripped off and we looked like a yard sale all across Wraps. We swam the canoe to the Mokes to put it back together. No real damage. I had to take off and paddle back home to let Stace come paddle. When I grabbed my board, I saw that someone had horked my leash. WTF??? Who does that? No camera with me on that trip, so no documentation on any of the above events. But take my word for it, it was EPIC.

When I got home, Stace had the one-mans loaded, and we headed back out. With the conditions being so awesome, Mike wanted to take the Opelu 4-man (from the OC-4 surf video) out again, so this time Stace scored the ride. I put Kai on back of my Pueo and followed them out. They stayed inside (and didn’t break anything…) and got some really fun rides. I stayed long enough to snap a couple pics, then headed back (Kai was getting cranky). Kai and I played on the beach for a while, and Stace got her chance to have some fun. Pics are below. Aloha.

When I came out of the tunnel on the way home from work, the whole east side was engulfed in one of the biggest NE swells in decades. When I got home, I had 3 voice mails about the surf… The guys were taking the Opelu out and needed more bodies. We couldn’t find anyone to watch the monkey, so only one of us could go… Stace let me go! I’m in! It was too big and closed out to get anywhere near the reef, so we surfed the reforms inside. We got one ride that went from abeam channels all the way to within 100 yards of the beach (about 1/2 mile). It was friggin’ amazing. That night I had a hard time sleeping, thinking about how awesome it was going to be the next day, but woke up to driving rain. When it let up enough to see, we went to Agnes’ for some muffins and then out to check the surf. Flat Island was flat, and Lanikai Reef and the Mokes was still bigger than normal, but really sloppy and sharky looking (lots of run-off and brown water).

Lanikai Reef is going off!!!

Kaile had fun running around on the beach. The picture below was taken with my iPhone. The light was pretty, so I ran back to the truck for the real camera…

Kaile on the beach Saturday morning.

Picture below was taken with the real camera…

Kaile still running around...

Rain came back… So we left.

Here comes some more rain.

Now, we are back home and it’s still raining… Time to find something to do.

OC-4 Surfin’! Join in the fun as Mike takes Derek, Stacey and Eric out for a few waves at the Mokes. This was my first ride in an OC-4, and now I NEED one! That thing is FUN!

I called Mike to ask about OC-4′s and get some info on what to buy / where / who from / used canoes / etc. He responded with “you wanna take one out?”. HELL YEAH I DO!! So we did. Mike borrowed the boat from his friend Robin, and we headed out (thanks Robin!). We dropped the cooler on the Mokes and then launched for the surfing you see below. I wanted to do some cool tricks, but am lacking in the skill department… Derek pulled some head stands, but his head blocked the camera, so they didn’t make the video. Following the fun, Mike let me steer back to Lanikai. I need some practice, but first I need to get a boat…

Push off Lanikai beach with Mike at the helm, and ride along for an OC-6 surf at the Mokes. The video only shows one wave, but they were surfing for over an hour before the end. We won’t get into what happened there, as that is another story… Enjoy the ride.
